World Music in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a major European centre for music from exotic parts of the world. Contact the Amsterdam Uitburo about gigs in the venues listed below, as well as at Paradiso and Latin bars.

Akhnaton
(tel 624 33 96, Nieuwezijds Kolk 25-27).
A young, multi-culti crowd jams this club every weekend to catch live hip-hop, Latin and Afrocentric acts.

Tropeninstituut Theater
(tel 568 85 00, Tropenmuseum, Linnaeusstraat 2).
Come here for sterling live music, mainly South American, Indian and African. Make a night of it too: the adjoining restaurant serves food to suit the performances.

Melkweg
(tel 531 81 81, Lijnbaansgracht 234A).
If Mongolian throat singers rock your world, then Melkweg, the city's premier venue for world music, is your spiritual home. Every week sees shows by a veritable United Nations of musicians and during June it co-presents the funky-flavoured Amsterdam Roots Festival.
